Celebrating 70 Years of Women in Travel
Last Tuesday evening, 25th February 2025, I had the privilege of attending the Association of Women Travel Executives' (AWTE) 70th Anniversary Celebratory Drinks Reception at the elegant 1 Lombard Street in London. As the founder of Antella Recruitment, I've always been passionate about supporting women in the travel industry, through my mentoring work Women in Travel Thrive and Women in Travel CIC.
An Evening of Celebration and Reflection
Walking into the venue, I was immediately struck by the palpable energy in the room. The space was filled with trailblazers, innovators, and leaders who have shaped our industry over seven decades. Some faces I recognised immediately – women whose careers I've followed and admired from afar – while others I was meeting for the first time, each with their own remarkable story to tell.
The AWTE has been championing women in travel since 1954, when Joan Richardson founded the organisation with a vision of creating opportunities for women in what was then a male-dominated industry. Seventy years on, the fruits of that vision were evident all around me.
Finding Strength in Vulnerability
We have often feared sharing vulnerability as being weak, however there was a safe space created in abundance that evening. The love, energy and support radiating out of that room was nothing but pure inspiring.
This sentiment resonated deeply throughout the event. As I listened to the speakers share their journeys – complete with challenges, setbacks, and triumphs – I was struck by how their willingness to be vulnerable actually revealed their immense strength.
Debbie O'Niell in particular, delivered a moving speech that highlighted how embracing our authentic selves, including our vulnerabilities, can become our greatest asset in leadership. Her words reminded me that true leadership isn't about projecting an image of perfection but about being genuine and connecting with others on a human level.
Celebrating Outstanding Achievements
The awards ceremony was a highlight of the evening, recognising women who have made exceptional contributions to the travel industry. The categories spanned from the Outstanding Achievement Award to the Rising Star of the Year, showcasing talent across all career stages.
The guest speakers – Dame Irene Hays, Jae Hopkins, Jane Pinfold, Michelle Laverick, and Lindsey Garvey-Jones – each brought unique perspectives on leadership and resilience. Their stories of overcoming obstacles and creating pathways for others was humbling.
Personal Reflections
Leaving that room made me feel proud of my own personal journey, hardships faced both personally and professionally. But that is another story for a different day, for now this is a celebration of our amazing women in our very special industry.
As a recruitment specialist, I've had the privilege of witnessing countless women navigate their career paths in travel. I've seen their determination, creativity, and resilience first-hand. The AWTE event reinforced my belief in the importance of creating platforms where women can connect, share experiences, and lift each other up.
Looking Forward
As the travel industry continues to evolve, the role of women within it will only grow in importance. The AWTE's commitment to fostering an environment for sharing ideas, debating trends, and networking with peers ensures that women will continue to have a strong voice in shaping the future of travel.
The evening wasn't just about celebrating the past 70 years but also about looking forward to the next 70. It was about recognising how far we've come while acknowledging the work still to be done.
Congratulations
Congratulations to all of our 70 industry colleagues nominated!
Your stories, achievements, and contributions have not only shaped the travel industry but have also paved the way for future generations of women to thrive. The AWTE's 70th anniversary celebration was a testament to the power of community, mentorship, and shared purpose.
As I returned to my desk at Antella Recruitment the following morning, I carried with me a renewed sense of purpose and connection. In an industry as dynamic and people-focused as travel, it's these human connections – the sharing of experiences, the offering of support, the celebration of achievements – that truly make the difference.
Here's to another 70 years of women leading, innovating, and transforming the travel industry. And here's to the AWTE for creating the space for our remarkable women to shine.
